House Concert – New Live Videos

Last Saturday night, Miss Rae ventured across the river to perform with her Midnight Ramblers  at a house in Wellington Crescent. Smoky Folk singer, Carly Dow warmed up the crowd with local Crooked Brother, Jesse Matas, joining her on mandolin for a few tunes. Chris Curpen filmed the show, and we now have an array of live footage that you may view in the Videos section. A few highlights from the evening included:

The debut of a Gospel-Blues song, “Campbell Road”, which analyzes the razing of Africville that occurred in Nova Scotia during the late 1960’s.

Here’s our rendition of Big Mama’s 1952 hit single, “Hound Dog”. As a child, Miss Rae saw a theatre production at the Roxy called “The Willie Mae Thornton Story” (starring Jackie Richardson), and Miss Rae was floored when this big belting sound filled the room.

Miss Rae & the Midnight Ramblers cover the Queen of Soul’s, “100 Days, 100 Nights”Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are one of Miss Rae’s top bands to see live. At fifty-six years old, Sharon Jones is truly inspirational as she commands the stage with her soulful voice, and energetic dance moves. Meanwhile, you’ve forgotten about the atmosphere and have absorbed yourself into the rhythms of another era.

Live at Miss Rae’s Place

Step into an old brick building, situated in the heart of downtown Winnipeg. Hear the sweet sounds of dusty records playing, and feel the warmth from a flickering candle. You are invited into Miss Rae’s Place, where we are excited to share with you a few tunes that were recorded late one Sunday night.

“Last Time”
is near and dear to Miss Rae’s heart, as the lyrical writings stem from her personal experiences.

“I Asked For Water” was released by Howlin’ Wolf in 1956. Raised on Alberta soil, Miss Rae speaks the truth while expressing sorrow for the land and communities that are being destroyed from the oil sands.
